Ice-TтАЩs journey is one of raw survival, reinvention and unshakable resilience. Born Tracy Marrow in New Jersey, he faced tragedy earlyтАФlosing both parents before age 11. Sent to live with an alcoholic aunt in Los Angeles, he was forced to grow up fast. By 16, he was on his own, navigating the mean streets of South Central, gangs and crime before enlisting in the Army.
But destiny had bigger plans. In 1984, Ice-T got his first break when cast as a rapper in the film BreakinтАЩ. From there, he pioneered gangster rap with songs like Six in the MorninтАЩ and New Jack Hustler, shaping a genre that spoke to the streets and unified black and white youth.
Never one to be confined to a single lane, Ice-T also formed the heavy metal band Body Count with his high school friend Ernie C. Their controversial track Cop Killer sparked national debate that had President Bush shouting his name in anger, proving Ice was never afraid to challenge the system. His band continued to thrive, earning a Grammy for Bum Rush in 2020.
While music made him a legend, Hollywood cemented his place as an icon. From New Jack City to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where heтАЩs played Detective Fin Tutuola for over two decades, Ice-T transformed himself from street hustler to televisionтАЩs most enduring stars currently in his 26th year on the show, a record! His directorial debut, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap, premiered at Sundance in 2012, showcasing his deep connection to hip-hopтАЩs roots.
Beyond entertainment, Ice-T is a cultural force. His books, including Ice: A Memoir of Gangster Life and Redemption, reveal the wisdom he gained from his past. He has spoken in prisons, at Ivy League and prestigious universities and corporations proving that his influence transcends music and TV. His commercial work for brands like Tide, Cheerios, Adidas and his narration for NBCтАЩs Super Bowl promos show his universal appeal.
In 2023, Ice-T received a star on the Hollywood Walk of FameтАФan achievement that would have seemed impossible for the young kid from South Central. Yet, he keeps pushing forward, recently producing a documentary on Fentanyl for A&E that will be released this summer.
