Norman first learned to cook and bake at his school in Portknockie Banffshire and although his Dad was a professional baker, Norman decided to join the Merchant Navy at the age of 17. Norman has always enjoyed baking and cooking as a hobby and was delighted to be selected to appear on Series Five of the Great British Bakeoff. The retired Merchant Navy radio officer from Buckie won the hearts of millions of viewers with his unassuming manner and rustic cooking style.
Since the Bakeoff experience Norman has found himself to be very much in demand for talks and demonstrations at many events in Scotland and he is just as happy talking about baking and the Bakeoff experience as he is in demonstrating his abilities with the rolling pin.
He recently appeared at the Taste of Grampian Food Festival in Inverurie Aberdeenshire alongside Jean-Christophe Novelli and fellow bakeoff star Nancy Birtwhistle. He has made television appearances with Michel Roux jnr, Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. He also accompanied Jamie Scott the 2014 Masterchef winner at the Highland & Moray festival in Inverness.
