About
Vassos Alexander
A charismatic and versatile sports presenter, Vassos was part of the award-winning 5live Breakfast programme with Nicky Campbell for a number of years and can now be found on Radio 2 with Chris Evans and his team. He is passionate and knowledgeable about practically all sports, and is a key member of the BBC’s tennis, athletics and golf teams – their 2010 Ryder Cup coverage recently won a Sony Gold Award.
Vassos is renowned for his witty and discerning coverage of a huge range of events over a decade of broadcasting – from the World Cup to Wimbledon, the Open to the Ashes, Olympic Games to World Darts. He’s equally at home on radio or television, and has also been stadium announcer for England rugby games at Twickenham and the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
Before joining the BBC, Vassos worked for Eurosport where he commentated on a wide range of sports including canoeing, table tennis, gymnastics, skating, weightlifting, extreme skiing and luge. He has also worked for local radio, ITN, Sky and Bloomberg News.
Vassos doesn’t just watch form the sidelines – he is always happy to have a go. He has narrowly avoided hitting a tree in a rally car, actually crashed during a race at Silverstone and hurtled head first down a bobsleigh track before the Vancouver Olympics.
Vassos also loves completing marathons and triathlons and blogs regularly for realbuzz.com about his sporting exploits.
He speaks five languages and lives in London with his wife and two young children.
